Laguna Beach & Lake Forest

Built in Lake Forest, installed in Laguna Beach

Laguna Beach homes are the hardest install we do, and the most interesting. The Three Arch Bay and Emerald Bay estates have openings that almost never repeat; every window is custom, the trim is hand-applied, and a stock shutter set has no business being there. The Top of the World hillside homes face every direction at once, so a single house may need different louver sizes and frame profiles on different exposures. The cottages of North Laguna and the bungalows of Bluebird Canyon have original wood frames that have moved with seventy or eighty years of marine humidity.

We recommend our Polylux hybrid or polyresin shutters for almost all Laguna installs. Real basswood, even with our ten-step finish, will eventually show the wear of daily salt and fog. Polylux has the look and feel of wood with the dimensional stability of a composite. It does not warp, yellow, or shrink at the joints. Real wood still has a place for fully interior rooms with no direct moisture exposure, and we'll say so when that's the case.

Laguna Beach is 25 minutes from our Lake Forest factory. Most projects here take longer to design than they do to install. That's how it should be; the design is where the cost of a wrong call shows up later.

Common questions

Why do you recommend Polylux over wood in Laguna Beach?

Marine air and unfinished basswood eventually argue. The wood drinks moisture, the finish gives up at the joints, and you end up with louvers that don't sit true. Our Polylux hybrid has a UV-stable composite shell over a hardwood core. It looks and feels like wood, paints like wood, and lasts indefinitely in coastal conditions.

Can you handle the custom shapes in Three Arch Bay and Emerald Bay homes?

Yes. These are the openings we mill our own panels for: eyebrow arches, hexagonal tops, mitered French-door cutouts, and bay window geometries that don't appear in any catalog. We measure the actual frame and the actual angle, not a standard.
